What is a Muul?
In Mayan culture, the muul is a mound structure, generally built with earth and stones. Although at first glance it may seem like a simple elevation of the ground, its meaning goes much further.
The muul were erected for ceremonial, funerary and astronomical purposes, and were carefully aligned according to the cardinal points or certain astronomical phenomena.
Ceremonial Use
The muul played a central role in the ceremonial life of the Maya, they were seen as connections between the earthly world and the spiritual world, places where mortals could communicate with the gods.
During ceremonies, Mayan priests climbed these mounds to perform rituals, offerings and sacrifices, believing that they were closer to the heavens and, therefore, to the gods.
Funerary Use
In addition to their ceremonial function, the muul also served as tombs for members of the Mayan elite.
Rulers and priests were buried in burial chambers located within these mounds, along with precious objects and offerings that they were believed to need in the afterlife; the structure of the muul, rising above ground level, symbolized the ascension of the deceased to the realm of the gods.
Astronomical Use
The Maya were exceptional astronomers, and the Muul also reflect this facet of their knowledge; many of these mounds were aligned with the solstices, equinoxes and other important celestial events.
Not only did this allow the Maya to keep accurate track of time and seasons, it also served ritual purposes, ensuring that ceremonies were performed at the most auspicious times of the year.
Construction of the Mu'ul
Building a muul was no easy task, requiring the collaboration of numerous members of the community, from the workers who transported the earth and stones, to the priests and astronomers who ensured the correct alignment of the mound. This process not only reflected the technical skill of the Maya, but also their ability to organize and mobilize large groups of people for a common purpose.
Spiritual Meaning
The muul were seen as symbols of the sacred mountain, a recurring concept in many ancient cultures, representing the axis mundi, the axis of the world that connects heaven, earth and the underworld.
In this sense, the muul was not only a physical structure, but a powerful spiritual symbol that encapsulated the beliefs and cosmology of the Mayans.
The Muul in Zazil Tunich
The importance of these structures that I have explained to you makes it necessary to make a plan to also learn about the structures found in Zazil Tunich. At the moment, 3 of these structures have been found in the area near the entrance to the cenote-museum, which indicates the importance that this area had for the Mayan People.
