How to plant your ceiba

Gently remove your ceiba from its jar

Once home, find a calm, bright place to begin. Carefully open the glass jar and take a moment to look at your seedling: a small symbol of new life and your connection with the earth. With clean hands, gently lift it out, taking care not to damage the roots or stem. If the roots are tangled or very wet, rinse them gently with clean water and let the seedling rest in the shade for a few minutes before planting. Let this moment bring back the memories of your visit to Zazil Tunich.

Choose its first home

Give your young ceiba room to grow. Start with a medium-sized clay pot or another natural-material container with good drainage, or a sheltered garden spot that receives indirect sunlight for part of the day. Avoid strong winds and deep shade. Use loose, rich soil, adding a little organic compost or leaf mold if available. Think of this first home as a place where your connection with nature can take root.

Plant with care and intention

Using a small tool or your hands, make a hole about 2–3 cm deep. Gently place the roots inside without forcing them into position, then cover with soil without pressing too firmly. As you plant, take a moment to think of a wish, an intention or a promise. This simple act can be a personal way to celebrate life, heritage and hope.

Water gently

After planting, water slowly with clean water until the soil is moist, not waterlogged. Use chlorine-free water if possible. In the first few days, water every two to three days or when the soil feels dry to the touch. Watch how your seedling responds: firm leaves and healthy color are encouraging signs. Regular care is a small gesture that helps your connection with nature grow.

Nurture your tree as it grows

Your ceiba will grow gradually. Protect it from harsh weather and give it light. Move it to a larger pot as it grows, or plant it in the ground when its roots are established. In the Maya worldview, the sacred ceiba connects the sky, the earth and the underworld. Caring for yours is a way to remember that heritage and continue the story of your visit.
